Publication Open Access Random DFB fiber laser for remote (200 km) sensor monitoring using hybrid WDM/TDM(IEEE, 2016) Leandro González, Daniel; Miguel Soto, Verónica de; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Bravo Acha, Mikel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, a random distributed feedback fiber laser is proposed as a multiplexing scheme for ultralong range measurements (up to 200 km). Optical fiber sensors are time and wavelength multiplexed overcoming one of the main limitations of long-range sensing setups, which is their limited multiplexing capability. The direct modulation of the laser's cavity allows the interrogation of sensors by measuring the reflected power for different wavelengths and distances. Fiber Bragg gratings placed at different fiber locations and wavelengths have been interrogated in two different sensor networks. In addition, in order to improve the performance of the system, some features have been analyzed.Publication Open Access High sensitive micro-displacement intensity fiber sensor by using a multiwavelength erbium doped fiber ring laser based on optical add-drop multiplexers(SPIE, 2014-06-02) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Leandro González, Daniel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this work, a wavelength division multiplexed fiber ring laser, based on optical add-drop multiplexers to interconnect intensity sensors has been experimentally demonstrated. Three different laser lines were obtained simultaneously all with an optical signal to noise ratio higher than 30dB. This proposed configuration is based on commercial devices and is adapted to the ITU channels normative. By using this configuration each sensor was associated with a different wavelength directly offered by each OADM and a reference wavelength was also included in order to distinguish between power variations induced by the transducer or to detect a fiber failure. This sensor system has been experimentally verified by using microbending sensors obtaining experimental slope sensitivity as good as -0.327dB/µm.Publication Open Access Multiplexing optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers based on air-microcavities(SPIE, 2019) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Novais, Susana; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Leandro González, Daniel; Silva, Susana; Frazão, Orlando; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónIn this work we demonstrate the multiplexing capability of new optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers based on airmicrocavities using a commercial FBG interrogator. Three optimized air-microcavity interferometer sensors have been multiplexed in a single network and have been monitored using the commercial FBGs interrogator in combination with FFT calculations. Results show a sensitivity of 2.18 π rad/mε and a crosstalk-free operation.Publication Open Access Tunable SESAM-based mode-locked soliton fiber laser in linear cavity by axial-strain applied to a FBG(IEEE, 2017) Aporta, I.; Leandro González, Daniel; Quintela, M. A.; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; López Higuera, José Miguel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y ElectrónicaA self-started stable tunable mode-locked (ML) soliton fiber laser in a linear cavity structure composed by commercial passive elements is presented in this paper. It is based on the combination of an Erbium doped fiber (EDF) as the active medium, and a saturated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as a partial mirror of the cavity. The other side of the cavity consists of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) acting also as the mode-locking device. The central wavelength of the FBG is selected by the application of axial strain giving rise to a tunable soliton over 8.6 nm on the C band with a variable spacing of 0.01 nm. The laser delivers 18.9 ps long pulses with a 0.14 nm bandwidth, an 8.2 MHz repetition rate, a pulse energy of 89 pJ and a peak power of 4.71 W.Publication Open Access Random fiber lasers: application to fiber optic sensors networks(IEEE, 2017) López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Leandro González, Daniel; Miguel Soto, Verónica de; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Fernández Vallejo, Montserrat; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta Elektronikoa; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica y ElectrónicaRecently, random mirrors have been proposed as a method to create fiber laser cavities. This kind of cavity is based on cooperative Rayleigh scattering, which is generated along a fiber due to the material inhomogeneities presented in that fiber. In this work, basics of Random fiber lasers and different demonstrated lasing sensors systems for interrogating arrays of optical fiber sensors are shown. These systems use different kinds of amplification and cavities schemes and can interrogate optical fiber sensors located up to 225 km away.Publication Open Access High sensitivity fiber-optic liquid level sensor using biconical tapered fibers(Optical Society of America, 2018) Júdez Colorado, Aitor; Leandro González, Daniel; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Galarza Galarza, Marko; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaA liquid level sensor is presented using a biconical tapered standard single-mode fiber, being its main characteristic an outstanding sensitivity for a low cost transducer. Temperature compensation is enabled with the same interrogation equipment.Publication Open Access Multiparameter sensor based on a multiinterferometric serial configuration for temperature and strain measurements(IEEE, 2021) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Leandro González, Daniel; Novais, Susana; Pradas Martínez, Javier; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaIn this work, a multi-parameter point sensor based on the combination of Fabry-Perot (FP) and the anti-resonant (AR) reflecting guidance in cascade configuration is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This structure, based on FP interference and AR reflecting guidance, was fabricated with two different air micro-cavities. The attained experimental results showed different strain and temperature sensitivities for the antiresonance contribution. However, when analyzing the FP interference, only strain sensitivity was observed, demonstrating that this air micro-cavity was also insensitive to temperature variations.Publication Open Access Micro-drilled optical fiber for enhanced laser strain sensors(SPIE, 2019) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Bravo Acha, Mikel; Roldán Varona, Pablo; Leandro González, Daniel; Rodríguez Cobo, Luis; López Higuera, José Miguel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de ComunicaciónIn this work, we present an experimental measurement of temperature and strain sensitivities of a micro-drilled optical fiber (MDOF). The MDOF consisted of a quasi-randomly distributed reflector along a single mode fiber (SMF). A fiber cavity laser based on MDOF was experimentally studied, attaining a single-wavelength laser emission centered at 1568.6nm. The output power level obtained from this single-laser oscillation when pumped at 140mW was around - 9.6dBm, and an optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of around 45dB was measured. Although temperature sensitivities of fiber Bragg gratings used as sensors are similar to our MDOF, strain sensitivity is enhanced around one order of magnitude when the MDOF was used.Publication Open Access Spatial-frequency multiplexing of high-sensitivity liquid level sensors based on multimode interference micro-fibers(Elsevier, 2020) Galarza Galarza, Marko; Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Leandro González, Daniel; Júdez Colorado, Aitor; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoaren eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritzaren; Institute of Smart Cities - ISC; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Universidad Pública de Navarra / Nafarroako Unibertsitate PublikoaThis paper shows a new fiber optic sensor multiplexed system for liquid level sensing. Biconical fibertapers converging at a 40 mm-long micro-fiber are used as transducers. The tapers are designed to providethe propagation of the two main cylindrical modes in the micro-fiber avoiding higher order modes ormodes with other symmetries. The liquid level is calculated in real time from the measurement of thefrequency and phase components of the spectral interference pattern of the submerged micro-fiber.The system is fully characterized by theoretical simulations in terms of the sensitivity as a function ofthe most responsive parameter, which is the width of the micro-fiber. Phase sensibilities of 3.7 rad/mmare experimentally obtained and values as high as 11.4 rad/mm are theoretically predicted. The strongdependence of the spatial frequency with the width of the micro-fiber has been used to multiplex threesensors in series in this domain. The maximum detected crosstalk between sensors is 0.2 rad/mm.Publication Open Access L-band multiwavelength single-longitudinal mode fiber laser for sensing applications(IEEE / OSA, 2012) Pérez Herrera, Rosa Ana; Ullán Nieto, Ángel; Leandro González, Daniel; Fernández Vallejo, Montserrat; Quintela, M. A.; Loayssa Lara, Alayn; López Higuera, José Miguel; López-Amo Sáinz, Manuel; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this work, a novel single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) four-wavelength laser configuration for sensing applications in the L-band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor system presented here is based on ring resonators, and employs fiber Bragg gratings to select the operation wavelengths. The stable SLM operation is guaranteed when all the lasing channels present similar output powers. It is also experimentally demonstrated that when a SLMbehavior is achieved, lower output power fluctuations are obtained. Characterization of the lasing structure for temperature sensing is also shown.
