MarLuc aims to improve people’s skills in their native language rather than a second language. The system was born as a tiny Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) web-based application targeted to improve pronunciation. Later it became a Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) application and has therefore incorporated some powerful native resources such as voice recognition present on mobile devices. Working with personal mobile devices has brought new exciting possibilities, including but not limited to easy access to native voice recognition and the utilization of bots. To reduce these risks, situational awareness is key. Although many advances have already been developed in wildland and outdoor fires, there is still room for improvement in structure fires. The development of a heat-resistant micro-aerial vehicle for indoor fires poses a series of challenges such as component cooling, battery management, and protection from impacts. In this paper, a heat-resistant tethered micro-aerial vehicle is designed, modeled through thermal analysis, and successfully tested in real-world conditions. Collision avoidance systems (CAS) are a key component in integrating a high number of UAS into the airspace in a safe way. This paper presents a distributed, autonomous, and knowledge-based CAS, called Dronetology System (DroS), for UASs. The CAS proposed here is managed using a novel ontology, called Dronetology-cas, which allows to make autonomous decisions according to the knowledge inferred from the data gathered by the UAS. DroS is deployed as part of the payload of the UAS. So, it is designed to run in an embedded platform with limited processing capacity and low battery consumption. DroS collects data from sensors and collaborative elements to make smart decisions using knowledge obtained from collaborative UASs, adapting the maneuvers of the aerial vehicles to their original flight plans, their kind of vehicle, and the collision scenario. DroS accountability involves recording its internal operation to assist with reconstructing the circumstances surrounding an autonomous maneuver or the details previous to a collision. DroS has been verified using the hardware in the loop (HIL) technique with a UAS traffic environment simulator. Although there is a significant research effort in radio channel modeling focused on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), not much work has been done for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) using 3D ray-tracing tools. This work evaluates some important parameters of a V2I wireless channel link such as large-scale path loss and multipath metrics in a typical urban scenario using a deterministic simulation model based on an in-house 3D Ray-Launching (3D-RL) algorithm at 5.9 GHz. Results show the high impact that the spatial distance; link frequency; placement of RSUs; and factors such as roundabout, geometry and relative position of the obstacles have in V2I propagation channel. A detailed spatial path loss characterization of the V2I channel along the streets and avenues is presented. The 3D-RL results show high accuracy when compared with measurements, and represent more reliably the propagation phenomena when compared with analytical path loss models. Performance metrics for a real test scenario implemented with a VANET wireless sensor network implemented ad-hoc are also described. The fuzzy automaton models the edit operations needed to transform any string into another one. The scenario under analysis is an emergency room area, where a patient is being monitored remotely with the aid of wearable wireless sensors placed at different body locations. Due to the advent of Internet of Things, in the near future a cloud of a vast number of wireless devices will be operating at the same time, potentially interfering one another. Ensuring good performance of the deployed wireless networks in this kind of environment is mandatory and obtaining accurate radio propagation estimations by means of a computationally efficient algorithm is a key issue. For that purpose, an in-house three-dimensional ray launching algorithm is employed, which provides radio frequency power distribution values, power delay profiles, and delay spread values for the complete volume of complex indoor scenarios. Using this information together with signal-to-noise estimations and link budget calculations, the most suitable wireless body area network technology for this context is chosen. Additionally, an in-house developed human body model has been developed in order to model the impact of the presence of monitored patients. A campaign of measurements has been carried out in order to validate the obtained simulation results. Both the measurements and simulation results illustrate the strong influence of the presented scenario on the overall performance of the wireless body area networks: losses due to material absorption and the strong influence of multipath components due to the great number of obstacles and the presence of persons make the use of the presented method very useful. Surrogate models have emerged as a powerful tool for increasing efficiency in the aircraft design and optimization process. We review and evaluate some modeling techniques, such as artificial neural networks and support vector regression, showing that Gaussian process regression generally provides a well-performing solution to this type of problem. We propose an active learning algorithm based on the relevance factor, that combines bias estimated from nearest-neighbor Euclidean distance and variance, to achieve higher accuracy with fewer compuational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The obtained performance is evaluated using four 2-D test functions and an experimental CFD case, indicating that the proposed active learning approach outperforms classical random sampling techniques. The intelligent van understands its environment, taking into account its location, the assets and the predefined delivery route; with the capability of reporting incidences to carriers in case of failure according to the established distribution plan. It is a non-intrusive solution which represents a successful experience of using smart environments and an optimized Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) embedded system in a viable way to resolve a real industrial need in the pharmaceutical industry. The proposed system employs different wireless links to collect data related to different bio physiological parameters of both the vegetation mass and the surrounding environment. Detailed analysis of these multilevel communication links is performed by using deterministic volumetric wireless channel estimation and considering underground, near ground and over ground radio propagation conditions. An in-house developed technique enables accurate wireless channel characterization for complete campus scenario considering the multiple link types and all its composing elements. Node definition and network topology is thus obtained by wireless channel analysis of over ground, near ground and underground communication for both 868 MHz and 2.4 GHz Wireless Sensor Networks in an inhomogeneous vegetation environment. Connectivity to enable user interaction as well as for telemetry and tele-control purposes within the campus is achieved by combining ZigBee and LoRaWAN transceivers with the corresponding sensor/actuator platforms. Coverage studies have been performed in order to assess communication capabilities in the set of multiple underground/near ground/over ground links, by means of deterministic channel analysis for the complete university campus location. Measurement results in lab environment as well as full system deployment are presented, showing good agreement with deterministic simulations. Moreover, system level tests have been performed over a physical campus cloud, providing adequate quality of experience metrics. Results show the highly impact that the distance, link frequency, location of RSUs and obstacles in the LoS (Line of Sight) have in V2I channel propagation. These results constitute the start point in the deployment of radio-planning in V2I environments.
