Intrinsic motivation (IM) is a determining factor in the teaching and learning process, but it is a
problem in secondary school and physical education (PE) because of its low level. The evidence on
the existence of differences in IM between boys and girls in PE shows different conclusions.
Therefore, the aim of this Master's thesis is to carry out a systematic review of gender differences in
MI in the area of PE in secondary school (12-19 years old). The search was carried out in Google
Scholar. After the selection process 7 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included. The
results show significant differences in the level of MI between girls and boys, with higher rates of MI
in boys in general. This reality suggests introducing more novel content, more gradual learning taking
into account the level of competence and autonomy of the students, and a motivation oriented more
towards learning and task, rather than performance and ego. The education system and teachers are
responsible for increasing students' IM and equalising levels of IM between genders. [--]
