This essay responds to the lack of assessment tools for multimodal texts, which have been recently
included in the Spanish educational curriculum and are specially relevant to the Spanish language
and literature course. It follows the Design Based Research methodology in order to solve this
problem and, thus, proposes a rubric that considers three main criteria: the presence of the five
semiotic modes (linguistic, visual, audio, gestural and spatial), the interactions between them and
the prototypical characteristics of the chosen genre, the news report. We coded a corpus of 27
videos in which 14 year old Secondary students recorded themselves telling the news report they
wished to see in the media. Then, the recordings were assessed with the initial rubric and included
a few improvements to strengthen the new tool. Finally, the rubric proved to be efficient to assess
the multimodal aspect of the videos as well as the way the students conveyed the genre of the
news report. This rubric proposal pretends to be a contribution to educational research and, more
importantly, to the teaching practice and its challenges regarding the new phenomenon of
multimodality. [--]
