Therefore the relationship between adherence to the MD and mortality was studied within the the Spanish cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Spain). The EPIC-Spain analysis included 40 622 participants (37·7% males) aged 29–69 years who were recruited from five Spanish regions in 1992–1996. During a mean follow-up of 13·4 years, 1855 deaths were documented: 913 from cancer, 399 from CVD, 425 from other causes and 118 from unknown causes of death. Risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality was assessed according to the level of adherence to a relative MD (rMED) score, measured using an 18-unit scale incorporating nine selected dietary components. A high compared with a low rMED score was associated with a significant reduction in mortality from all causes (hazard ratio (HR) 0·79; 95% CI 0·69, 0·91), from CVD (HR 0·66; 95% CI 0·49, 0·89), but not from overall cancer (HR 0·92; 95% CI 0·75, 1·12). A 2-unit increase in rMED score was associated with a 6% (P,0·001) decreased risk of all-cause mortality. A high olive oil intake and moderate alcohol consumption contributed most to this association. In this Spanish cohort, following an olive oil-rich MD was related to a significant reduction in all-cause mortality, and reduced the risk of mortality from CVD. Trend analysis for cancer incidence rates for long periods of time, might help determining risk factors as well as, assessing prevention actions involved in this disease. The objective of this study was to describe the incidence of brain and CNS cancer using data from the population-based cancer registry of Navarre, (Spain) during the period 1973-2008 and provide forecast figures up to-2014. Crude and age-standardized (world population) incidence rates of brain cancer per 100,000 person-years were calculated by the direct method separately by gender, area (Pamplona and others), and age-groups. Penalized splines for smoothing rates in the temporal dimensions were applied in order to estimate and forecast cancer incidence rates. Age-adjusted incidence rates showed an increase over the study and forecast periods in both sexes more marked in women than in men. Higher incidence rates were observed in men compared with women but the differences became smaller with time. The increase was due to the rise of rates in the oldest age groups since the rates for younger age groups remained stable or decreased over time. As the entire aetiology of brain and other CNS cancer is not still clear, keep promoting healthful lifestyles for cancer primary prevention among the whole population is necessary.Publication Open Access Prostate cancer incidence and mortality in Navarre (Spain)(Gobierno de Navarra. A nivel mundial, el cáncer de próstata es uno de los tumores malignos más comúnmente diagnosticados en los hombres. En este estudio, se analizan las tendencias de la incidencia y mortalidad de cáncer de próstata, global y por grupos de edad, para mostrar la situación epidemiológica pasada y actual de la enfermedad en Navarra (España). Método. Para el estudio se utilizaron los casos incidentes diagnosticados entre 1975 y 2010, y las muertes observadas entre 1975 y 2013. Los datos fueron proporcionados por el Registro de Cáncer de Navarra y el Instituto Nacional de Estadística respectivamente. Se calcularon las tasas de incidencia y mortalidad estandarizadas por edad, los puntos de cambio y el porcentaje de cambio anual (PCA) mediante modelos de regresión de joinpoint. Se usaron modelos unidimensionales de P-splines para estimar proyecciones hasta 2016. Resultados. Se observó un considerable incremento en las tasas de incidencia de cáncer de próstata en hombres de 45-74 años, con PCA de +4,5% (p<0,001), +9,5% (p<0,001) y +2,4% (p<0,05) en los periodos 1975-1990, 1990-2000 y 2000- 2010, respectivamente. En el grupo de mayores de 74 se registró un aumento de incidencia en el período 1975-1999 (PCA +3,3%, p<0,001), seguido de una disminución significativa hasta 2010 (PCA -4,0%, p<0,01). Las tasas de mortalidad aumentaron hasta 1995 (PCA +2,2%, p<0,001), mientras que descendieron en el periodo 1995-2013 (PCA -3.4%, p<0,001). Conclusión. Aunque las tasas globales de incidencia de cáncer de próstata parecen estabilizarse en 2002-2010 en Navarra, las tendencias fueron diferentes según los grupos de edad, aumentando en los hombres de 45-74 años y disminuyendo en el grupo de mayores de 74 años. Se observó una disminución en las tasas de mortalidad en ambos grupos de edad desde 1995. However, there are two regions in the north of the country, Navarre and the Basque Country, ranked among the European regions with the highest incidence rates for both males and females. Our objective here was two-fold. Firstly, to describe the temporal evolution of the geographical pattern of brain cancer incidence in Navarre and the Basque Country, and secondly, to look for specific high risk areas (municipalities) within these two regions in the study period (1986–2008). Methods: A mixed Poisson model with two levels of spatial effects is used. The model also included two levels of spatial effects (municipalities and local health areas). Model fitting was carried out using penalized quasi-likelihood. High risk regions were detected using upper one-sided confidence intervals. Results: Results revealed a group of high risk areas surrounding Pamplona, the capital city of Navarre, and a few municipalities with significant high risks in the northern part of the region, specifically in the border between Navarre and the Basque Country (Gipuzkoa). The global temporal trend was found to be increasing. Differences were also observed among specific risk evolutions in certain municipalities. Conclusions: Brain cancer incidence in Navarre and the Basque Country (Spain) is still increasing with time. The number of high risk areas within those two regions is also increasing. Our study highlights the need of continuous surveillance of this cancer in the areas of high risk. En España, se ha observado un aumento de la incidencia de cáncer colorrectal (CCR) en ambos sexos en los últimos años, posiblemente debido a las mejoras diagnósticas, a la occidentalización de la dieta y al empeoramiento de los niveles de obesidad entre otros. En este trabajo se han estudiado las tendencias de la incidencia de CCR en las diferentes áreas de salud de Navarra (norte de España) durante el período 1990-2005. Métodos. Para cada sexo y área, se obtuvieron las tendencias de las tasas de incidencia y los correspondientes intervalos de confianza mediante modelos de P-splines. Resultados. Se observa una tendencia creciente de la incidencia de CCR en la mayoría de las áreas para ambos sexos, siendo menos pronunciada en las mujeres que en los hombres. En la zona centro de Pamplona (la capital) se observa una tendencia decreciente para los hombres durante el período estudiado. Conclusiones. Para cambiar las tendencias crecientes observadas en la mayoría de las áreas de la provincia, la prevención primaria es la mejor estrategia. Sin embargo, adquirir estilos de vida saludables tiene resultados a largo plazo por lo que un programa de detección temprana serviría como estrategia de prevención a más corto plazo.
