Publication Open Access Diseño de filtros banda rechazada usando Defected Ground Structures (DGS)(2003) Garde Irigoyen, Ieltxu Aitor; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a type of Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is studied and used to implement filters in microstrip technology. It is first demonstrated that the main parameter which controls its operation is the external perimeter, and that the periodicity is no longer required in order to achieve a filtering response. These two important conclusions are used to fabricate filters comparable to others already made by other authors, which are constrained to equal unit cells and a periodic distribution of them.Publication Open Access Horn antenna lens for multi-beam applications(2010) Lizarraga Cubillos, Juan Camilo; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaA spherical discrete lens antenna based on the back-toback combination of two choked-horn antennae arrays interconnected through smooth waveguides sections implementing the spherical phasing law, has been designed, simulated and fabricated. The spherical phasing law of the lens converts the incoming spherical phase front, from a small feeder placed at the focal plane, into a plane phase front. Depending on the feeder position at the focal plane (the perpendicular plane to the len's axis containing the focal point) the beam is pointed in different directions. The minimum angular distance between two beams is directly related to the minimum distance between two adjacent positions of low directive and, therefore, small feeders. The selected implementation offers several advantages compared to an actually curved lens, such as the simplification of the fabrication, the constant length of the phasing waveguides and the dispersion of the backscattered power, reducing significantly the coupling between feeders.Publication Open Access Estado del arte de las antenas que combinan corrugaciones horizontales y verticales(2005) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn the present paper the state of the art, possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of the patented corrugated horn antennas that combine horizontal and vertical corrugations is being covered. These rather new type and probably not very well known yet, corrugated horn profiles; combine in the same horn antenna both horizontal and vertical corrugations. This horn antenna produces with reasonable bandwidth, low crosspolarisation, and low sidelobe levels in a physical size smaller than any other solutions. In fact, designs from 15 to 30 dB directivity have been prepared and some of them have been manufactured, tested and arranged for an emerging market that is being served by Flann Microwave Ltd. at present.Publication Open Access Discrete lenses for multibeam applications(2011) Lizarraga Cubillos, Juan Camilo; Crespo López, Gonzalo; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe capability of having many different beams illuminating the earth surface from a geostationary satellite has been an issue of interest during the last few years. The need of increasing the services provided by satellites urges the designers to propose different alternatives.Publication Open Access Reduction of phase shifters in planar phased arrays using novel random subarray techniques(MDPI, 2024-07-06) Valle, Juan L.; Panduro, Marco A.; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Brizuela, Carlos A.; Covarrubias, David H.; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio IngeniaritzaReducing the number of phase shifters by grouping antenna elements into subarrays has been extensively studied for decades. The number of phase shifters directly affects the cost, complexity, and power consumption of the system. A novel method for the design of phased planar antenna arrays is presented in this work in order to perform a reduction of up to 70%70% in the number of phase shifters used by the array, while maintaining the desired radiation characteristics. This method consists of creating fusions of subarrays to generate random sequences that form the best feeding network configuration for planar phased arrays. The obtained solution allows scanning the mainlobe at 𝜃=−40∘θ=−40∘ elevation with a range of scanning of [−75∘<𝜙<75∘][−75∘<ϕ<75∘] in the azimuth plane, while maintaining a side lobe level below −10−10 dB and achieving a reduction of 62%62% in the number of phase shifters. It is shown that each solution is created based on search criteria, which influence the morphology of the array in terms of subarray size and orientation. The proposed methodology shows great flexibility for creating new phased antenna array designs that meet the requirements of specific applications in a short period of time.Publication Open Access Manufacture and characteristics of wide bandwith, 3-D, EBG crystals for sub-millimetre antenna substrates(2004) Azcona, L.; Alderman, B.; Huggard, P.G.; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Martínez Pascual, Beatriz; Ederra Urzainqui, Íñigo; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Hon, B.P. de; Beurden, M.C. van; Marchand, L.; Maagt, Peter de; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaPublication Open Access Modern corrugated horn antenna design for extremely low sidelobe level(2003) Teniente Vallinas, Jorge; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaThe present paper deals with the design of modern corrugated horn antennas for extremely low sidelobe level with the use of the well known corrugated Gaussian Profiled Horn Antenna aperture (corrugated GPHA’s) to improve the radiation pattern and reduce the antenna size. Some design rules will be given so that an initial nice profile can be used quickly as input profile of modern optimization codes to improve the size. This initial profile can reduce the computing time of an optimization program quite a lot, so it is usually the method we use to design the final corrugated horns in our own optimization code.Publication Open Access Diseño de filtros paso bajo usando Defected Ground Structures (DGS)(2003) Garde Irigoyen, Ieltxu Aitor; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper a new method of trully design of filters using Defected Ground Structures is proposed. It makes use of the model proposed in previous developments by the same authors and simplifies it to a first-order model formed only by an inductor. This is done in order to make the process easier and more straight-forward. The tabulation of the inductors which are equivalent to DGS is made varying the perimeter. This allows us to connect to the classical theory and therefore to design any desired filter. The results obtained are very good and can be applied to other cases.Publication Open Access Diseño de filtros en guía rectangular usando estructuras PBG's(2000) Mendióroz, Luis; Martínez de Espronceda Cámara, Beatriz; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaA new application of dielectric periodic structures (also known as PBG) to build and design waveguide filters is presented. The periodic structures have some stop frequency bands, band gaps, defined by the geometry, within any mode can propagate through the structure. One could use this particular feature of the periodic structures to implement waveguide filters, or any other device with some frequency dependence [1,2]. In particular, we will focus in the description through an example of all the different effects produced by this kind of structures within a rectangular waveguide.Publication Open Access SCATTMAT: herramienta C.A.D. para el análisis de componentes en guía de onda circular con variaciones simétricas del radio(1996) Liberal, Antonio; Lahera, Miguel; Río Bocio, Carlos del; Gonzalo García, Ramón; Sorolla Ayza, Mario; Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa eta ElektronikoaIn this paper, a C.A.D. tool to simulate simmetrical radial deformation microwave devices, using the modal analysis and scattering matrix techniques is presented. The code has been developed in C++ language, working with Windows resources, in a personal computer. The user can obtain as graphic result the internal evolution of power along the component. The profile component is defined using a 2-D function because of the simmetrical variations. The results have been succesfully tested with experimental results of differents authors.
