El clero navarro ante el euskera en los años de entreguerras

Una aproximación histórica a la actitud del clero navarro ante el euskera durante los problemáticos años veinte y treinta del siglo XX. A través de la información, extraída fundamentalmente de fuentes eclesiásticas y de algunos estudios realizados durante el propio período estudiado, se trata de esclarecer cuál fue el papel que jugó la Iglesia católica en torno a la pérdida del euskera en una parte importante del territorio navarro. Una actitud en la que convergen una retórica favorable al euskera como barrera contra la modernización, con un abandono de esta lengua en la labor pastoral de muchas localidades en las que se iba imponiendo el castellano, lo cual a su vez era denunciado por algunos sectores del clero. Se trata, pues, de una cuestión compleja, cuyo esclarecimiento resulta además de suma importancia para comprender mejor la gran influencia social del clero navarro.

XX. mendeko bigarren eta hirugarren hamarkadetako urte zailetan elizgizon nafarrek, euskara zela eta, izan zuten jarrerarako historia hurbilketa. Batik bat Elizaren iturrietatik eta aztertu den epean bertan egin ziren zenbait azterketatatik ateratako informazioaren bidez, Nafarroako lurraldearen zati handi batean euskara galdu zela eta, Eliza katolikoak izan zuen rola zein izan zen argitu nahi da. Jarrera horretan bat egin zuten, alde batetik, euskararen aldeko erretorikak –euskara modernizatzearen aurkako hesi moduan ikusten zen– eta, beste alde batetik, herri askotan artzain lanean hizkuntza hau alboratzen joateak –pixkana gaztelania nagusitzen ari baitzen–. Era berean, azken hori salatu egiten zuten hainbat elizgizonek. Honenbestez, auzi konplexua da, nahiz eta berebiziko garrantzikoa den elizgizon nafarrek izan zuten gizarte eragina zein izan zen ulertu ahal izateko.

An historical approximation to the attitude of the Navarrese clergy to the Basque language in the troublesome Twenties and Thirties of the XX century. The information forwarded, mainly taken from ecclesiastic sources and a few studies performed during the period under study, aims to clarify the role played by the Catholic Church in the loss of the Basque language in a signifi cant part of Navarrese territory. Rhetoric favouring Basque as a barrier to modernisation and the abandonment of the language in the pastoral work performed in many localities in which Castilian was taking an ever-increasing hold, in turn denounced by some sectors of the clergy, converged in this attitude. It is, therefore, a complex question, the clarification of which is of the utmost importance when it comes to fully understanding the enormous social influence of the Navarrese clergy.
