La Transición o la recuperación de una España posible

La cuestión nacional se hizo irremediablemente presente en el empeño de reconstrucción democrática del Estado realizado durante la Transición española. Frente a la «España eterna» de Franco y la «España metafísica » del primer tercio de siglo, se abre paso ahora una concepción pragmática de España despreocupada y orientada al futuro. ¿Tuvo Adolfo Suárez como artífice de la Transición un proyecto nacional para la democracia? ¿Fue el Estado de las Autonomías el fruto menos logrado del consenso constitucional? La Transición supone la afirmación de una «España plural» cimentada en la inteligencia conjunta de Democracia y Autonomía. Ese pacto y el que establecen Monarquía y Democracia, de no menos alcance histórico, son garantía de una España posible. El Estado de las Autonomías no es un híbrido del centralismo franquista y de la necesidad de responder a las pretensiones nacionalistas. El Estado de las Autonomías es toda una afirmación democrática de las Españas profundamente respetuosa con la tradición liberal.

The «national question» was unavoidably present along the process of democratic rebuilding of the State done during the Spanish Transition. In the Transition years, makes its way to the forefront a new and pragmatic conception of Spain, carefree and future-oriented, which contrasts strongly with Franquist «eternal Spain» and with the «metaphysical Spain» of the first third of the present century. Had Adolfo Suarez, as the Transition's master builder, developped a natinal blueprint for democracy? Was the State of Autonomies the less successful outcome of the consensus about the Constitution? The Transition presuposes the agreed affirmation of a «plural Spain», understood on the combined acceptance of Democracy and Autonomic structure. Such a covenant together with the alliance agreed between the Monarchy and Democracy, of no lesser far-reaching historical importance, are the guarantee for a «possible Spain». The State of the Autonomies is not a hybrid resulting from the acommodation of Franquist centralism and the need to give an answer to nationalistic claims. Rather, the State of the Autonomies is a democratic affirmation of the Spains of the past, wholesome and deeply respectful of the liberal tradition.
