Sesma durante la II República (1931-36)

Abstract

Aunque no fue una conflictividad tan intensa como en los vecinos pueblos riberos, también Sesma sufrió la conflictividad que agitaba la II República. La razón de esa menor intensidad parece estar en que las obras sociales del clero en torno al Círculo Católico paliaron las necesidades de los más pobres. Esto dio un gran poder al clero local, que no tolerará a la minoritaria pero activa izquierda que se formó en torno a la UGT. El clima social fue muy tenso, produciéndose varios incidentes violentos. La reivindicación de una solución para el desigual reparto de la tierra no era exclusiva de la izquierda y el ayuntamiento conservador tuvo que emprender un deslinde y negociaciones con los corraliceros, ambos avanzaban con dificultades hasta que en 1936 fueron paralizados.

Although it was not as intense a dispute as the neighbouring villages in the irrigated plains, Sesma also experienced the unrest which shook the II Republic. The reason for this reduced intensity seems to reside in the fact that the social works of the clergy, centred around the Catholic Circle, alleviated the needs of the very poor. Thus endowed with great power, the local clergy would not tolerate the minority but active left wing that grew up around the UGT -General Workers Union-. The social climate was very tense, giving rise to various violent incidents. The demand for a solution to the unequal distribution of the land was not exclusive to the left, and the conservative town hall had to undertake boundary demarcation and negotiations with pastureland owners. Both lines of action progressed with difficulty until 1936 when they carne to a halt.
