Sensors were obtained by sputtering ITO thin-films onto 25 mm-length segments of 200 μm bare optical fibers. Depositing a 1 μm thin-film of ITO leads to obtain reduced thin-film resistances of near 340 ohms. This allows the detection of voltage signals by monitoring the wavelength shift of the resonances. Sensitivities up to 40 nm/V can be achieved when tracking sinusoidal signals of a few cents of mV peak-to-peak. In many applications, low-frequency transformers are being substituted for medium-frequency and high-frequency transformers in order to reduce the volume and therefore the cost of the transformer. However, preventing their saturation is a complex task. This paper studies the medium-frequency transformers' flux balancing in a novel three-phase topology for cascaded conversion structures.Based on the modulation technique of the converter, a method to directly measure the magnetizing current of the medium-frequency transformers is proposed in this paper. A control loop to regulate the dc value of the magnetizing current is also designed and developed. It can effectively damp the LCL output filter resonant poles for low ratios of resonance to sampling frequencies. However, the existing delays in the control loop limit the applicability of the capacitor-voltage positive-feedback. For high ratios of resonance to sampling frequencies, it becomes ineffective and can even destabilize the system. This limitation is overcome in this paper by adjusting the delay in the feedback path. With the delay adjustment, a robust damping can be achieved if the delays are properly considered, including the filters, and the grid impedance variations are taken into account. The proposed method emulates a virtual impedance damping the wide range of resonances that appear in offshore wind farms, depending on its configuration and number of turbines connected. Its effectiveness is evaluated for two modulation techniques: PWM and selective harmonic elimination PWM. PWM generates predictable harmonic content outside the resonance range, enabling robust damping of resonances. In contrast, selective harmonic elimination PWM¿though optimized to eliminate the harmonics in the resonance frequency range¿introduces distortion in this range due to modulation-control interactions in closed-loop operation. This distortion demands excessive corrective action from the AD, limiting its practicality. On the other hand, technological advances have allowed the development of increasingly efficient distributed generation systems and the emergence of microgrids, whose studies have been focused on architecture, elements, and objectives of the associated energy management strategies. In this regard, energy management strategies based on a Fuzzy Logic controller have been developed for electro-thermal microgrids where parameter optimization has been carried out through heuristic procedures of trial and error with acceptable results but involving a high computational cost. To solve the aforementioned drawbacks, in the present work the use of Cuckoo Search optimization nature-inspired algorithm that allows the adjustment of Fuzzy Logic controller parameters and ensures a higher quality of energy management is proposed. Obtained results show encouraging outcomes for the use of these meta-heuristic optimization algorithms.Publication Open Access Advances in sensors using lossy mode resonances(SPIE, 2023-11-27) Matías Maestro, Ignacio; Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y de Comunicación; Ingeniaritza Elektrikoa, Elektronikoa eta Telekomunikazio Ingeniaritza; Institute of Smart Cities - ISCLossy mode resonance (LMR) is a phenomenon that is observed in the optical spectrum when a mode that progresses through a waveguide starts to be guided in a thin film deposited on this waveguide under certain conditions, mainly related to materials and angles of incidence. An important property that LMRs have is that they can be guided into the thin film with both magnetic (TM) and electrical (TE) polarized light, unlike the other two main types of optical resonances with the same modus operandi that complete this trilogy, surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) and surface exciton plasmon resonances (SEPR). Regarding the potential materials that make up thin films, they include dielectrics suchs as metal oxides such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), tin oxide (SnO2) or polymers. In all cases it must be fulfilled that the real part of the refractive index must be greater than its imaginary part, unlike also the SPR and SEPR. As for the angles of incidence, they must be close to 90º, which explains the success of deposition of thin films around an optical fiber to obtain sensors based on LMR, although interesting results have recently been obtained using planar waveguides. This work will present the main milestones obtained during more than a decade using LMR-based sensors for the detection of multiple parameters. To monitor PFAS levels in drinking waters, sensitive and versatile sensing strategies are urgently required. Since many perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), are fatty acid-mimic, delipidated human serum albumin (HSA) can be applied as biorecognition element for the design of novel PFAS sensors. Here, two albumin-based biosensing strategies are described and compared: i) a lossy mode resonance (LMR) fiber optic one and ii) an impedimetric portable one developed on screen-printed electrodes. In both biosensing platforms, HSA was covalently immobilized via EDC/NHS chemistry using the carboxylic moieties of the polymeric layers previously deposited at the transducer surface. Afterwards, the conformational changes related to the formation of HSA/PFOA complex were followed considering: i) the LMR spectral shifts for the optical platform and ii) the changes of absolute impedance for the impedimetric one. Reflection spectral data has been obtained from alfalfa samples comprising six different qualities. Obtained data has been classified and organized to feed supervised self-learning algorithms. Neural networks have been used in order to differentiate the quality level of the samples. Obtained results permit to validate the proposed approach with 72% of the samples properly classified. In addition, proposed solution was implemented in a low cost automated detection prototype suitable to be used by non-qualified operators. The sensing head was designed, ruggedized and customized to measure velocities at different depths, in order to calculate the discharge in open channels. Intentamos investigar este proceso de llenado de sEMG. Métodos: Se registraron señales EMG superficiales del cuádriceps de sujetos sanos a medida que la fuerza aumentaba gradualmente de 0 a 40% MVC. El proceso de llenado sEMG se analizó midiendo el factor de llenado EMG (calculado a partir de los momentos no centrales de la señal sEMG rectificada). Resultados: (1) Al aumentar gradualmente la fuerza, aparecieron uno o dos saltos bruscos prominentes en la amplitud del sEMG entre el 0 y el 10% de la fuerza MVC en los vastos lateral y medial. (2) Los saltos de amplitud se originaban cuando aparecían en la señal de sEMG unos pocos MUP de gran amplitud, que destacaban claramente de la actividad de sEMG anterior. (3) Cada vez que se producía un salto brusco en la amplitud del sEMG, se iniciaba una nueva fase de llenado del sEMG. Conclusiones: El proceso de llenado del sEMG tuvo una o dos etapas en los músculos vastos, estando el sEMG casi completamente lleno a fuerzas muy bajas (2-12% MVC). However, this will cause challenges due to the non-static channel effect and interference impact. For this reason, a research work is proposed that enables to obtain optimal node location in relation to radio planning tasks (coverage/capacity analysis, number of lost packets, devices’ consumption...), as well as to characterize the environments considering obstacles and human body being, in terms of the received power level in the complete simulation volume and at the time domain level. Together with conventional crystalline (c-Si) PV modules, “new” commercially available PV technologies such as copper indium selenide (CIS) based solar cells have appeared achieving a similar efficiency comparable to c-Si at similar production cost. In addition to the use of cheaper materials, CIS solar cells manufacturers claim some enhancements such as lower temperature coefficient or higher absorption of diffuse light that achieve to reduce the cost of electrical energy. Although several papers deal with this topic, little is known about real comparisons between CIS technology and conventional crystalline at a PV generator level with real test conditions. In the framework of Smart Cities and Smart Regions, providing context aware environments is compulsory in order to take full advantage of system integration, with updated information exchange among Intelligent Transportation system deployments. In this work, inter-train wireless system connectivity is analyzed with the aid of deterministic 3D wireless channel approximations, with the aim of obtaining estimations of frequency/power volumetric channel distributions, as well as time domain characteristics, for different frequency bands. Two state-of-the-art raytracing tools - Wireless InSite and Sionna - are utilized to analyze the capabilities of currently available open-source and commercial raytracing engines for THz simulations. A channel sounder measurement campaign at 300 GHz was conducted in a conference room at Fraunhofer HHI, which is used to validate the raytracing simulations. Additionally, the measurements are compared to a proprietary raytracer, optimized for THz simulations. This paper presents a guideline to increase the capabilities of state-of-the-art raytracing tools, to obtain good results for high frequency simulations. The comparisons show, that currently used raytracing tools are not sufficiently accurate for THz simulations. One of the tests proposed by regulations is to evaluate the response of grid-forming inverters to a Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF). However, there is no detailed analysis of the effect of control parameters on the active inertia power. This article presents the temporal response equation of an inverter subject to a RoCoF and introduces the concept of equivalent inertia showing that it also depends on the damping factor. Thanks to this analysis and the flexibility of inverters, the parameter design of existing grid-forming strategies is proposed to achieve the desired active inertia power and system damping ratio. The proper characterization of lithium-ion cells is of vital importance for the development of precise models that permit the simulation and prediction of their behavior, so as to suitably configure cell groupings for the resulting battery packs, and to properly select the most suitable cells from the extensive manufacturer offer. In this work, an analysis is conducted of the main techniques used in the literature to characterize batteries. Also, an experimental comparative is carried out on 18650 Liion cells from three large global manufacturers, focusing on the primary methodologies used to characterize capacity, internal resistance and open circuit voltage. AC winding loss in these inductors have become a major issue in the design process, since switching frequency is being continuously increased in power electronic converters. Finite element analysis software or analytical models such as Dowell's are the main existing alternatives for their calculation. However, the first one employs too much time if different designs are to be evaluated and the second one lacks accuracy when applied to toroidal inductor windings. Last decade, stimulated by progress in terahertz (THz) instrumentation, a keen interest has been attracted to the THz spectral range to develop its potential for detecting and measuring properties of thin films. The THz radiation can be an alternative to visible and IR waves when examining optically opaque coatings. Meanwhile, due to a rela-tively large wavelength λ, the conventional spectro-scopic methods (TDS-, FDS-, FTIR-, BWO-based) are ill-suited for direct characterization of films with the thickness d of about 2−4 orders of magnitude smaller than λ. This problem can be solved with met-amaterials, in particular, with plasmonic metasurfaces (PMSs) [1–5]. The plasmonic resonance exhibits a high sensitivity of its spectral response to the dielec-tric environment due to a strong field localization what makes possible measuring of analyte layers sat-isfying d << λ condition. The traditional approach of THz thin-film sensing with PMSs is based on detecting a frequency shift of the resonance when the analyte is deposited onto the PMS. In this work, we present the idea to substitute THz spectral measurements for tracking the PMS re-sponse at a fixed wavelength upon changing the incidence angle θ of the exciting THz beam. This concept works well for the PMS with a narrowband resonance sensitive to θ. In order to reverse this trend, a teaching innovation project was designed based on the planned use of active learning methodologies in collaboration with Navarra's leading companies in industrial electronics. The project aims to enhance student learning by making teaching more engaging and practical, as well as boost the social visibility of electronics by improving the perception among students of this strategic industrial sector in the region of Navarra.
