Abstract
The encounter with the American continent forced Europeans to rethink a large number of knowledge that was considered safe. It was also necessary to rethink and qualify the sources of authority of those who wrote about the American territory and its inhabitants. This paper approaches the work of Gregorio García, Origen de los indios de el Nuevo Mundo e Indias Occidentales, from this perspective, and analyzes the role that the Spanish Dominican gave to opinion as a source of authority when compiling the different theories on the origin of the inhabitants of a territory that had remained totally unknown to the Old World until a century before.
