Introduction
The intensive care units offer an individualize and continued attention to critical patients. They stand out for their development of speciality and technology, relegating the most humans aspects into the backgorund.
Currently, these units are in a changing moment in terms of organization and structure in order to cover the needs demanded by patients and families.
Objectives
Analyze the scientific evidence that shows the demands of patients and family members about their needs in the ICU, define which are their needs and delimit the opinion and difficulties perceived by nurses in the integration of family members in the ICU.
Methodology
A narrative sistematic bibliographic review was made in the following databases: Cuiden, Cinhal, Scielo, Sirius, EBSCOhost, Dialnet Plus y Pubmed. 4 journals especialized in ICU were reviewed as well: Intensive Medicine, Journal Clinic Nursing, Intensive Nursing and Health Times.
Results
After selecting the articles that met with the established guideline, 20 articles were selected of which 10 were literature revisions, 6 were cualitatives studies and the other 4 were cuantitatives researchings. After this articles revision, it was demonstrated the lack of care for the most emotional aspects of patients and family members in the ICU.
Conclusions
This work reveals the importance of including the family in ICU care to cover emotional and family needs, making it necessary to make current schedules more flexible. [--]
